kentuckykrawlers.org FAQs (frequently-asked questions)
Category: Main -> Kentucky Krawlers General QuestionAnswerHow much does it cost to become a Kentucky Krawler? The total cost is $20.
- $5 of your money goes to a great organization called the Trailkeepers. They are a group based out of Ohio that do closed trail rides for members, trail cleanups, and they also run the UROC east rockcrawling competitions.
- $15 of your money goes to revenue for the club. Sometimes money is needed to make down payments on t-shirts, pay for stickers, raflle items are sometimes bought to raise money for the club. Paid members recieve official Krawlers club stickers as part of their annual fee. The club's exec team manages the club funds and provides full disclosure to the members. Back to top
How did Kentucky Krawlers start? One night in London, Kentucky there was a small meeting held at Chris Corum's shop to decide to form an offroad club. The people that were in attendance were Dean Handy, Brent Ward, Chris Corum, Kim Morton, and Nathaniel Sears. Then we brought our ideas about the club to our 4 wheeling friends like Todd Claiborne, Nathan York, Brian Hisel, and Cliff Planck.
From there on the idea was spread to more and more people. Eventually we got support from many people in the Lexington area with money and product donations like Rusty Bray, Travis Roark, Greg Hiens, Mark Scott, Jim Shannon, and John "Flash" Combs.
Now what started as a small meeting in Corum's shop has spread to include a rock solid group of 4 wheelers here in central Kentucky and surrounding areas.

Can I drink alcohol on a trail ride? No. This was a decision that was voted on by the club at a meeting. We have many reasons for not drinking on the trail. We don't care if you drink at a function, party, at the campsite, etc. Just no drinking on the trail. Most organizations that call themselves offroad clubs heavily enforce this rule.
1. We try to promote bringing your family, wives, children, etc on a trail ride. It's hard to portray a family image with a safe environment with a drunk on the trail.
2. We ride on National Forest land, where it would be illegal anyway.
3. If an accident occurs and alcohol is involved, then something bad could happen. We don't want to hold a person, like the President or Trail Boss, responsible for a rollover that occured and hurt someone.
4. We're trying to uphold a good image in the offroad community. If you are on a trail drinking with your buddies with a big Krawlers sticker on your rig...think what image that would portray to other offroaders you see on the trail. We'd have the reputation of being "drunks."
5. We don't want to have to try to control drinking by punishing people if they drink too much on the trail. It's better if the problem was not there in the first place.

What do I need to bring on a trail ride? I've only been out a few times before with my buds at the local mudhole. Here is a small list to help out if you are a new person to the 4 wheeling world.
- Tow straps. Even the biggest of rigs get stuck. It's always a good idea to try to get a long one, like 20' or 30' and a shorter one. Don't get one with metal hooks on the ends. They are good to make a flying object at someone's head!
- Tow points. We can't really pull you out safely unless we have somewhere to attach to. If you have a Jeep Wrangler, you can throw some tow hooks on the front of your Jeep. Frame mounted points are always better. Anytime I have pulled someone out by wrapping a tow strap around a shackle or knotted it around something other than a tow point...the strap was ruined and the person was still stuck.
- Fire Extinguishers would be nice. There was a ride a couple of months ago that 2 extinguishers were used on one vehicle. So, yes...freak things can happen.
- Food, drinks, toilet paper, medicine, etc. Sometimes you never know when you are going to come out of the woods. Always go prepared.
- Spare parts. Bring spare parts. Simple things like a u-joint can mean either you leaving the ride early or you riding all day and having fun.
- The bare essential tools. Zipties, duct tape, wrenches, vice grips, hammer, whatever. I've saw zipties hold a leaf spring pack together. You never know what you need. Go prepared.
- First Aid kit.
- Whatever else you can think of to make your offroad outing as fun as possible. Back to top
How can I tell who is an official member apart from a regular person using our forum? If the person in the forum is an official Kentucky Krawler, then the title under their name will say "Official Krawler". Some people have titles under their name, like President, Vice President, and so forth. This is one way to recognize people who are official members.
The other way is to go look at the list of official members in the General Discussion link in the forum. Back to top
Can I go on a ride with the Kentucky Krawlers even though I'm not a member? Yes you can go on most rides with the Krawlers.
We welcome visitors to any of our rides and enjoy it very much. We sometimes ride with TKO members, Ohio River 4 Wheelers members, and people that we meet on the trail. It's always good to meet new people.
Of course, being a member has its perks. Every year we have a big, annual club ride which is for members only. Also, as a Krawler member you are a member of the Trailkeepers. Every year the Trailkeepers members have rides that are closed to Trailkeepers members. You get to go to them too.
If you are on the forum almost everyday and ride with us every time we go out trailriding, wouldn't it be odd if you didn't pay to be a member? Nobody is going to make you pay, but it would be common courtesy to pay to be a member if you ride with us every other time you go out 4 wheeling. Back to top

Typically we try to meet once a month during an outing for a brief meeting. However, this year most have been busy do to other reasons and not getting out as much as planned.
